So if you are reading this post, it will hopefully put you in good stead for the future.Bittah.com is the defacto home of Tribes in Australia and New Zealand, and although not strictly a Tribes discussion site, most of the Tribers hang out on the bittah forums or on bittah IRC. Remember, we all had to start somewhere. It may feel like you have no idea whats going on at times but if you stick with it you'll find its the most unique and exciting game out there. And besides, its free you cheap bastards~! What you need to have installed in order to play onlineDefense TurretBefore you think about jumping online to play Trbes 2 (Tribes 1 does not require this) you must download Defence Turret. Defense Turret [DT] is a community made anti-cheat program. It is much like punkbuster for other online games. All Australian server currently require you to be running DT to play. If you need any help installing or have any question jump in IRC and ask. Download it here . Tribes Flavours * Tribes 1 [T1] : The original is not as widely played in AU/NZ however there is still competition in the US. * Tribes 2 [T2] : Tribes 2 is played by the bittah majority with quite a few playing both. There is a 12 man and 7 man competition on the TWL. Tribes 2 is played on the “Classic” mode mostly, although there people that enjoy LAKRabbit and TR2. * Tribes Vengeance [T:V] : The upcoming 3rd instalment in the Tribes series. T:V is dues out later in the year and is eager anticipated by Tribers all over the world. Official site Modifications: Tribes 1 * LT – LT is a mod to address the lack of player numbers in T1. You spawn with light amour and certain weapons. You can not enter an inventory and chnge amour classes. * Base : Pure out of the box T1. The most widely played form of the game today. Tribes 2 * Base As far as au/nz is concerned, Base is the old T2. It was the official gaming type for public play and competition until Classic was released. Base is a slower and more tactical style of game which at the time was vastly different to the game play of Tribes 1. Base relied heavily on vehicles to get around large maps, and skiing was difficult as there was a speed cap on how fast players could move along the ground. * Classic Mod Classic mod was released with the last T2 patch around 1.5 years ago. It dramatically increased the speed at which player could move and introduced a new set of smaller maps. Vehicles are not as widely used as in base and there are a lot of other tweaks and improvements to game play. All completion and all CTF public games are played on the Classic mod. You don’t need to download anything to play it is as it is all included in the game. There is no speed cap so players can move at high speeds across maps. Classic is mostly played on Capture The flag [ctf] games modes. Make sure if you are practicing that you are playing Classic gametype. There are vast differences between the two. This is the version of Tribes 2 people play 90% of the time * LAKRabbit [LAK] Initially made up to be a form of practice for aiming and player movement Lak has built upon the existing Rabbit idea to bring a much revamped gametype. LAK is played with 2 – 10 player. It rewards players for getting the craziest mid-air shots with points by calculating speed, distance and vectors. There is one flag on the field and who ever holds the flag is the rabbit. Every other player chases down and tries to kill the rabbit. Sounds like fun eh. What you need to have in order to play online You will need a couple of map packs to start you off in either T1 or T2. Client side maps are a big feature of T2 and most of the popular maps that are played today are community created. They may seem like a large download initially, but the game has been out for some time so there are vast new content available. It is a one time download, its a must to play online otherwise you will be dropped from the server when a clientside map comes on. T2 map packs * Euromappack2 @ http://www.files.blazingaces.com/T2-mappacks/Europack2_v112b.zip * Xpack2 @ http://www.files.blazingaces.com/T2-mappacks/xpack2_maps.zip * TWL Map pack @ http://www.teamwarfare.com/files/dl/Tribes2/TWL-MapPack.vl2 * IPGN Pub Pack @ http://www.users.on.net/jvaughan/ipgnpubpack.vl2 (Save the vl2 files to tribes2/gamedata/base directory and thats it!) Finding servers and getting onlineFiltering Local T2 AU/NZ serversTo filter out all non-Australian/New Zealand servers in the serverlist, you may setup a filter. Open up Tribes 2 and get to the serverlist lobby, and click 'Change Filter'. You may then select 'New Filter' and fill in the appropriate fields. Simply name to the filter 'Aus/NZ', 'Local Servers' etc, something appropriate. In the region selection, ensure only 'Australia' is checked, and you will pick up both AU/NZ Servers in the list. Some servers however are not configured to show up in the Australian list (but are indeed based in Australia/NZ), so its best to do a full refresh of all servers (select the filter 'All Servers') and click the 'Favorite' column under low ping servers. Connecting to IRC Server : irc.bittah.com (To connect to this server in your IRC Client, type: /server irc.bittah.com in the chat box when opening your IRC Client). Or, visit the bittah Chat page on the lefthand menu: http://www.bittah.com/chat/index.php To access the chat and see some statistics. The main chat channel is #tribes From there just introduce yourself as to being new to the game and you will (hopefully If you check the channel list, other channels (for clans and other tribes-related chats) are also listed. Australian / New Zealand competition sceneCurrently there is a 12 man competition running on Teamwarfare League , this is the heart and soul of T2 competition. There are also 7man tournaments running from time to time. Stay tuned to bittah for more information on these.Tribes abbreviationsLike most online games Tribes has it’s own set of abberiations. They may vary from player to player of course. Here are a few of the most used:Defence related * LD: Light defense. A player that defends a the flag in a light kit with energy. Their primary role is to chase down the enemy cappers, however they man try and stop incoming heavy offence. * HOF: Heavy on flag. This is a player that sits on top of the flag in heavy amour. There role is to stop enemy capper grabbing the flag. Generally they will carry a shield pack, some HOFs like to user a repair pack. They will try and use the chain gun to kill an incoming capper where the flag is open or plasma if the flag is in an enclosed area * HD or BaseD: Generally a heavy armored play that will protect the generators in their base. Generally they will use a repair pack * Shrike D: A player that defends the flag with a shrike. * TM: Turret Monkey a player that deploys turrets , portable inventory station, sensors and does general repair. also known as a turret farmer. * MF: Mid Field. A player that is positioned in the middle of a map. They generally try and stop incoming heavy offence and cover their team’s flag carrier Offence related * Cap: To capture the enemy flag * Capper: A player dedicated to capturing the enemy flag * HO: Heavy Offence. A player in heavy amour that attacks the enemy base. They will try and clear the flag of enemy players or will attack enemy assets such as turrets, generators , inventory stations, etc. * Rape: The act of destroying the enemies generators, inventories etc. osnipe(er): To snipe enemy player using the laser rifle is an offence role, ie at their base.. usage: DOX is a dirty osniping homo. * LO: Means Light Offense, to Harass the Defense disable the defense SCTS or spikes or invs. Disrupt the D so they focus on you and the capper can get the flag or cap it if u have the opportunity. Return your flag it it has been taken. Be annoying. Equipment * Vpad: the vehicle pad. * Gens: the generator. Usually powers all base assets such as inventories (not deployables though) lights, vpad, sensors and base turrets. * Inv or invo or RIS: ( Remote) Inventory station. Can be either deployable or base version. * SL: Shocklance. Game Play * SKI or Skiing: Holding the jump key down causing a player to jump rapidly. This makes the player increase speed and cover ground quickly when using the terrain effectively. Try jumping off a hill and hold down shift. * MD(ing): mine disk. The act of throwing a mine and then shooting it with a disk or spinfusor. This will significantly damage a Heavy and kill a light amour. * MA: Mid Air. The act of killing a player in mid air. Generally with a disc but it can apply to any weapon. * BB(ing): BB means Body Blocking. Usually used for body blocking the capper as he comes into cap * Disk Jumping: Where a player shoots a disk at his/her feet causing their speed/height to rapidy increase * OOB: Out of Bounds: Beyond the grid surrounding all maps. If you carry the flag past this grid, you will drop it. (Except for TR2 or Lak where the OOB grid is bouncy and will bounce you back into play. * Dstack: Defence stack. When a team has the majority of their players in defence roles with little (if any) offence * Turtle: In a flag stalemate (when both teams has each others flags) a turtle is considered when the flag bearer jumps into a vehicle. Used to happen often with Tanks due to their high armour, but now also happens with any vehicle. Some people also consider turtling when the flag bearer moves deep into their own base to make retreival more difficult for the opposition How not to play Tribes 2 (Tips and tricks)Instead of telling you how to play the game, we will instead tell you how NOT to play it. Hopefully it will make life easier for all. These are kinda the unwritten player laws in au/nz. They are by no means forced (not all though) but most are generally agreed upon by the majority.1. Raping base assets when there are less than 10 players on each side is frowned upon and may result in being warned and kicked from the server. Major incidents include destroying the enemies inventory stations constantly. Base turrets are often allowed to be destroyed, but it is always best to check with the other team first. 2. Setting up a turret farm under 6v6 is generally frowned upon depending on the map. Some maps allow turrets to be very effective and results in a poor game for the offensive team. Again, always best to chat to them and simply ask 'Do you mind if i turret?' Turrets are fun, they compliment big 16 v 16 games perfectly, but ultimately we play online to play againt other people, not ai. 3. Using satchel as a defensive measure (say, defending the flag) is generally frowned upon UNLESS you let the rest of the defence know what you are doing. Alot of the maps allow a HOF to be much more effective at stopping an incoming capper than a satchel is. The worst thing you can do is satchel the flag when a hof or LD are already there, then kill the entire defence when you decide to detonate the satchel. Be aware of other defence/assets before deploying it. This rule also applies if you decide to mortar the flag when an enemy is approaching. Just be aware of team mates before you let off the big green egg. 4. If you decide to be a capper be VERY aware of other people on your team who are also going for the flag. A very big ettiquite here in au/nz is to call the flag grab by pressing VFF as you are beginning your run. Experienced cappers have details ski routes, so if they call the flag and you decide to grab it anyway, there will likely be a lot of abuse directed at you. 5. Cloaking in your own base, besides being unneccessary, will generally get you team killed by another team mate. People dont expect team mates to cloak in their own base so if they hear the cloak noise they will generally TK. It is understandable, so dont complain if this happens to you. 6. KEEP LEFT Besides being impossible to enforce, its stilla good idea if you try to do it. In any entry/exits .. try to keep left. As you will no doubt find out, it is easier for a chokepoint in the map to clogged by players trying to get in and those getting out. Also give way to players in heavy armour, they dont have as much maneuverability and are prone to getting pissed off alot more easily 7. If there is a HOF already posted on your flag, ASK him before you too go HOF. A lot of the time it is easier to HOF with 1 person than 2, and using 2 HOFs on a map is often considered a d-stack (defence stack) because it is usually not needed and just makes the map a stalemate. 8. Turtling (while sometimes neccessary) is generally frowned upon depending on how far you are willing to go. As examples, taking the enemy flag deep into your base on any map and setting up 6 clamps to cover you is considered a turtle. Likewise if you jump into a tank when there are 3 base turrets and 4 LD covering. While of course, the idea is for them not to retrieve your flag, in public games it makes for a more frustrating game when there is little flag turnover. Easiest way to know if you are turtling is if you say to yourself, 'If the enemy was doing what i was doing, would that piss me off to no end if i was trying to retrive the flag?' If you say yes, try and consider making it a bit easier on everyone. Trust me, its more fun for all and makes things a lot more intense 9. If you decide to start your own turret farm, consider the usefullness of the turrets / sensors to the rest of your team. Most commonly done by newer players, they decide that setting up 4 spikes, 2 invs and 15 sensors 400m behind you base will be a help to the team. Deployable assets are of limited number, so if you do this dont be surprised if team mates come and destroy some of your items so they can replace them in more useful spots. Typically the best spots for turrets are around the flag or generator. Remember though, youll have to plan where to put them otherwise they will interfere with each other. If in doubt, dont hesitate to ask a TM on some pointers 10. The last but most important rule of all, dont come into tribes thinking that you know everything about games because you headshot teh terrorists or can fly around in circles on battlefield. You simply cannot compare the gameplay. The worst thing new players do is that they come in thinking they are pwn on a stick ... ignoring people telling them not to do something online, not bothering to watch some demos of other players, or simply not caring to watch how other people play. If you come in with this sort of attitude, your guaranteed not to last long in the world of tribes at all. If you have read this far, you certainly have potential. Good luck - The AU/NZ Tribes Community Where to ask for help in playing Tribes 1, 2 and more information on Tribes: VengeanceThere are two main methods to having questions answered on the three games
