* We do have the source code to the game, and the build has been updated with bug fixes
* Andrew has been working closely with us on it
* The build will be distributed through the website, but still playable as a standalone game.
* The game will use the existing Master Server system that the original game used. We will provide a new master server address with the release.
* The game is not compatible with version 1.11 but you should be able to play the same demos as recorded on previous versions
* Mods and configs used in 1.11 will not be directly compatible, without at least minor changes, as the base game scripts have been cleaned up considerably by Andrew
* The game does NOT have updated graphics, this was a PR misunderstanding. The game does support modern file formats (PNG textures, Zip files)

Nice, can't wait to see it in action.
That said, I can see the following happening:
- Brief surge in numbers as newbies / vets get back into the game.
- Vets either hang around or get bored
- Newbs tire of the learning curve and leave
- Numbers dwindle back again..
Hopefully that doesn't happen though. _________________

What is really interesting is that they purchased all the tribes IP. Including Tribes 2.
Perhaps we'll see tribes 2 revamped for browsers in the future (ala Quake live)

What does this mean for the actual tribes game though? _________________ According to legend, Zhang Sanfeng is the originator of Wu Dang quan. He was said to be inspired by a fight he witnessed between a white crane and a viper.

I can't see this being a good thing in the long run.
A web-based gaming company that owns the Tribes IP... yay. _________________ kustom [t1]

mmm yeah, true. I guess it will be better in the long run.
still not sure about the whole tribes browser thing. from my understanding its a different version to the actual tribes we all play now and it is incompatible. so seperate servers etc, possibly splitting up players between versions _________________ kustom [t1]

No, a Tribes revival will not happen just because GarageGames decided to port Tribes into the browser. It needs to have something new - something that will bring the vets back. The newbies also need to have competition at their own level - how you accomplish that, I don't really know.
Nothing will happen with this port. Tribes needs to be extended from the same design as Tribes 1.
Here's an interesting observation: Sometimes a new concept will bring a lot of gamers into a game when you market an old entity as a new concept. For example, Planetside was touted as being a big MMO, with jetpacks, although the concept had already existed with Tribes. Although PS isn't Tribes, the analogy holds.
The first thing that should happen in any event is for the veterans to throw off a few old egos and start jumping through hoops again. In other words, Tribes needs a new direction for revival.
So this news is really not at all eventful.

By the way, I really do not at all consider myself a good Tribes player, but I have thought about it from a design perspective.

It's great that the developers that actually wrote the code have it back in their hands. It was one of their most successful titles and I hope that nostalgia brings them back to release a Tribes 3 which blows everyone away and leaves the vets grinning with that Tribes glow again. _________________ Blog: http://www.ravpup.com
